How often should you groom your pet?

Dogs:

  • Most dogs should be brushed daily. Short hair dogs can get away with being brushed only a few times a week.

  • Dogs should have their nails trimmed every 3-4 weeks. Their nails should NOT be touching the floor when they walk. Delaying nail trims can cause injuries to your dogs’ paws, cause pain while walking, and lengthen the quick which will lead to more difficulty trimming their nails in the future.

  • Most breeds should have a bath every 4-6 weeks

  • Frequency of haircuts varies greatly between breeds

  • Most breeds will benefit from being professionally groomed every 6-10 weeks. Talk with your groomer to discuss the frequency in which you should go to the groomer and what services you should get at each visit.

  • Dogs would ideally have their teeth brushed daily. This is a struggle for most dog owners, so brushing your dogs’ teeth sometimes is better than never. Pro tip: the toothpaste is more important than the manual brushing. If you are able to get the toothpaste on both sides of your dogs’ mouth you’ve succeeded! Obviously the more you can actually brush, the better, but I am never one to discount small victories.

Cats:

  • Both long and short haired cats should be brushed DAILY

  • Long haired cats should be professionally groomed every 6-8 weeks

  • Short haired cats should be professionally groomed at least 3-4 times a year

  • Typically, cats should have their nails trimmed every 4-6 weeks. This may vary for kittens, elderly cats, or outdoor cats.

  • If you struggle with litter and waste sticking to your cats behind after using the litter box, I recommend trimming their sanitary area every month or so. Be sure to check your cat’s behind regularly and clean off any litter or waste that seems stuck on sooner rather than later.
